Today, everyone is unanimous regarding one system : twin discs and pads.

Even only a few years ago, the drum system was still widely used on bottom of the range motorcycles, the 125 cc's, and scooters, but this system is destined to disappear due to the qualities of the disc (light, braking application, power, cooling).

The materials

There are two main types of brake pad: there are the sintered and the organic types.
Carbon pads are also used in competition.

Progress is continually being made in motorcycle brakes and increasingly specific products are being developed every year.

Brake pads for scooters recently appeared on the market.
Depending on what you use your bike for you may opt for organic pads(for day-to-day use and economy) or sintered pads (for a sporty riding style or on superbikes, giving more incisive braking), in the same way as for tyres.

The importance of the brake fluid

The brake fluid is the direct medium linking up to your intention to brake (pulling on the lever) and the effort itself (pushing the pads onto the discs).
It is of prime importance.
It works under very high pressure and temperature conditions.
Depending on the use to which the machine is put and the braking power required, there are several types of fluid, distinguished by a DOT standard followed by a figure which determines the fluid compression ratio.
