Cleaning

Make it shine!
Open to pollution, insects and the weather, a motorcycle gets dirty very quickly. It needs to be cleaned regularly not only to look good, but also for safety reasons. On a clean bike, any leaks are easier to detect.

Generally speaking, you need to wash your machine regularly in order to prevent the grime from retaining humidity which will oxidise the metal parts of your machine.

Do not clean your bike with abrasive products: the fairing only provides scant protection of the vital components (carburation, electronic modules, ignition, instrument cluster, transmission).
So you should avoid the pressure washer, (such as the Kärcher) however practical it may be, and use the good old methods: mild soap, a sponge, warm water and special cleaning products (shampoo, polish…).

Tip: Do not clean in direct sunlight, no high pressure and no aggressive detergents!

  • Step N°1: Pre-clean

Start with the hardest part: Remove chain grease from the rear wheel, the swinging arm and the whole rear of the machine, using a degreasant (or diesel) and wash off quickly.

Tip: Make sure there is no degreasant in the wheel bearings.

New brake dust is easily cleaned off the wheels and calipers… but once it dries on, a brush will be needed to remove the dust.

Tip: Use Elf N-Contact. Also clean the area all round the pistons (inner surface of calipers).

  • Step N°2: Wash-dry

The hardest part is done, wash the rest of your machine with a detergent (Elf Moto-Shampoo), wash off and dry with a chammy leather

Tip: Never use solvents on the plastics or windshield. Avoid picking up sand and dust in the chammy leather, as this will scratch the panels. For sun-dried mosquitoes, use ladies stockings or tights and rub gently… the result is amazing!

  • Step N°3: Protect

Now your bike is clean, you can finish it off by using protective products and polishing products. There is a whole range of products from polish (aerosol or wipes) to tar protection (Total Ultra-Détachant).

Micro-scratches are one of the causes of ageing of your machine. For the painted parts, use a polish (Elf Moto-Polish or Elf Gomme-Rayures), these are ideal solutions to restore the shine to your motorcycle

Tip: In winter, don't hesitate to wash your machine regularly, because the salt and grit spread on the roads are extremely corrosive for the metal parts!
